Medhi el Jaouhari was born in Tunisia to a Jewish mother and an agnostic father from a Muslim background. He was the first of what would turn out to be four children, the rest of them daughters, and the family moved to Casablanca when he was ten years old and his mother was pregnant with his last sister. His father is the owner and current president of an agro-industrial conglomerate specializing in wine and oils, and also owns a partial stake in a large Moroccan investment company with interests in finance, hospitality, and distribution. With such an ambitious businessman at its head, it's no surprise that the family is rich. Like, really rich. Obscenely rich. 10-million-dollar yacht sitting unused in the marina on the off-chance they might want to take a weekend trip up to the Mediterranean kind of rich. So imagine his father's alarm and frustration that his eldest child and only son opted to give all that up to do underpaid work for grassroots charities on both sides of the ocean? But the way Medhi sees it, it's practically an obligation. When Nesrine el Jaouhari was pregnant with her son, her very first child, she was overcome with anxiety. Friends and loved ones tried to convince her that worries are common for new mothers and that her baby would undoubtedly be fine, but she couldn't get over her worries, slowly allowing them to prevent her from living her life normally, hardly even leaving the house except to make trips to the doctor for every minor ache or pain. During one rare, hard-won morning of self-confidence and bravery, armed with the certainty that frequent walks are good for a baby's health, she decided to go for a stroll around the safe streets of her neighborhood. As she was walking, she was passed by a truck carrying lumber. The lumber was improperly secured. As the truck made a sharp turn, several pieces of lumber came free of the cords meant to hold them in place and sliced through the air towards Nesrine. She saw them, and in the same moment - as she insisted many times, and every time she tells the story - she felt hands at her back give her a gentle but firm push. Her husband insists to this day that her survival instinct kicked in, and friends have suggested that what might have been a trip could have felt like a push, but Nesrine knows the truth. That single, inexplicable push knocked her out of harm's way, undoubtedly saving both her life and that of her unborn child. And if there was any question left in her mind, all doubts disappeared when her little boy Medhi began to show signs that he had special powers of his own: an imbued human being, touched by an angel. Medhi has been shown to have powers of compulsion: by touching another, he can 'compel' them to answer truthfully, and in some cases, even to act a certain way. His powers manifested in early childhood and have grown with practice, although he realized very quickly that what he was doing was an affront to free will, at which point he made a promise to himself that he would only use his power on others if given permission - or if there was a very, very good reason. A divine reason, maybe. In the meantime, despite his love for his parents and his sisters (especially Yasmin, the second of three, who happens to be his favorite), he's decided to leave behind the excess material wealth of his family home and use his unique talents to help others. Despite his mother's pleading, his father's as-yet unconsummated threats of disowning him, and the much more aggressive attempts to bribe him back home, he remains abroad, collecting experience with various nonprofit organizations under his belt. He currently takes temporary positions as a Campaign Director for nonprofits seeking to boost their growth, spends a lot of time getting to know the city he's living in, and puts a little too much thought into the concepts of Heaven and Hell, order and chaos, good and evil. In the end, he feels, it's all about the big picture. |
